Wood Workbench Review - Palm Router - Last Part

Wood Workbench - Last conclusions on Palm Routers

I don't have the Bosch GKF 600 anymore and had to sell it second hand, since it was no use for me.

But for you to have one idea of the damage it made, follows some photos of what I accomplished with that router. I was trying to make a round over the all wood plate so the finish could be better, the wood used to make the plate was 18mm pine (no MDF).

In this photo you can see when the bit caught one vain from the wood due to the excessive speed it just ripped of some of the wood, making all the work that I already had on that piece straight to garbage.

Bosch GKF 600 - Damage

When it managed to make the pattern of the bit, the excessive speed caused the wood to burn.

Now follows the same round over bit used with the GKF 600 on the Makita rt0700c with speed on setting on one.

Here also with Makita and the round over bit on a square plate:

I really hope the two reviews above helped you guys that are looking to buy one palm router decide on the best option. I just like to do some works on wood as one hobbyist so both routers came out of my pocket. Not saying that Bosch tools are bad, I have some other tools from them and I'm more than satisfied, but from the Professional line I was expecting a little more.

Please comment.

Wood Workbench Review - Palm Router - Second Part

Wood Workbench Review - Makita rt0700c

After the adventure with the Bosch GKF600, I went back to the net and searched what went wrong. Found out that for some bits and the kind of wood will imply working at an certain speed, that's why I mentioned that variable speed was so important.

Now I'm a very proud owner of one Makita rt0700c and what a difference from the Bosch.

Is not all good news, in spite off seems to be very sturdy in the construction the collets seem to get rusty very quickly.
Regarding one thing that we should look also in these routers is how precise the height adjustment of the bit is. I didn't find problems with the Bosch GFK 600 but the Makita definitely is easier to work on.

Technical Specifications:

Power: 710w
Speed: 10000-30000 rpm's
Weight: 1,8 Kg's
Shank: 1/4''/6 mm/8 mm

Pros:
+ Sturdy
+ Reliable
+ Variable Speed

Cons:
- Heavy for one palm router
- Collets seem to get rusty very quickly
- No carrying case
- It would be good to have one integrated light

Wood Workbench Review - Bosch GKF 600

Definitely a palm router is something that we all should have in our workshop.
They are very handy for some quick trimming and even to do some light work on wood.

Recently I bought one Bosh GFK 600, found the price great, full of extras and let's be honest is from Bosch professional line so I tough is one sure bet.
Follows the main specs:

Power: 600w
Speed: 33000 rpm's
Weight: 1,5 Kg's
Shank: 1/4''/6 mm

It arrived perfectly and I was very excited to try the new "toy". After unpacking all and set the bit that I intended to work, I didn't find hard to set correctly the height adjustment of the bit. What was my surprise was the fact when it started eating all the wood damaging one entire peace. This was the day that I found out one of the most important specs in routers -> Variable Speed.

Bosch GKF600 Laminate Trimmer GFK600

For that reason alone, I already sold it and after some investigation on the net I found that this model is sold in the US with the name Colt and that version already has variable speed.

Nevertheless it was one very expensive lesson.

Pros:
+ Very sturdy
+ Reliable (no reports of problematic units)
+ Light weight

Cons:
- No variable speed
- It would be good to have one integrated light
